Services Slated Thursday for John Siefken

John Siefken, age 72, of rural route 1, Holland, passed away at his home at 6:35 p.m. Monday evening, September 5, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, September 8, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, 2 miles west of Fern. Burial will be in the Holland cemetery, Holland. Carl Regnerus will officiate the service.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma of RR1, Holland; one daughter, Mrs. William (Karen) Shillinglaw of Marshalltown; two sons, Paul Siefken of Wellsburg and Charles Siefken of Holland; two brothers, Gerhard (Gus) Siefken of Bristow and Henry Siefken of Grundy Center; two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Maifeld of Allison and Mrs. Berta Algood; four grandsons and two great-grandsons.

A memorial fund has been established. Public visitation will be held at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and at the Church prior to the services. A complete obituary will follow in next week's Register.

John Siefken, Age 72, Dies

John Siefken passed away at his rural Holland home at 6:35 p.m. Monday, September 5.

Funeral services were held at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, rural Holland, on Thursday, September 8 at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Carl Regnerus officiated.

Wayne Arends sang "One Day At A Time" and "Going Down The Valley." He was accompanied by Mrs. Clarence Walterman, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Casket bearers were Francis Gustosky, Clarence Henze, Edward Schoolman, Kenneth Pruisner, Dave Bishop and William Marten.

Ushers were Raymond VanHauen and Merle Bakker. Mrs. Clarence Muller and Mrs. Carl Voss Jr. were in charge of floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Holland Cemetery, Holland. Relatives and friends were invited to return to the church following the committal service for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments.

Mr. Siefken was born September 18, 1910 at Holland, the son of Heinrich A. and Antje Poppen Siefken. He attained the age of 72 years, 11 months and 17 days. He grew up in Holland and received his education in the Holland school.

On February 17, 1940 at the Holland Christian Reformed Church parsonage he was united in marriage to Thelma Dunham. In 1942 they moved to Bristow where they lived for one year. They then moved to Grundy Center and he worked for International Harvester Company for four years. They moved back to Holland and he did carpentry work for many years. Then he worked for the Sindt Machine works at Reinbeck, before becoming a radio dispatcher for the Grundy County Sheriff's department in Grundy Center, retiring in 1975.

He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, rural Holland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and two infant brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma; one daughter, Mrs. William (Karen) Shillinglaw of Marshalltown; two sons, Paul Siefken of Wellsburg and Charles Siefken of Holland; two brothers, Gerhard (Gus) Siefken of Bristow and Henry Siefken of Grundy Center; two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Maifeld of Allison and Mrs. Bertha Algood of Holland; four grandsons and two great-grandsons.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of arrangements.
