Mrs. Poppenga Dies At Waterloo
Mrs. Lena Poppenga died about 7:30 Sunday night at Waterloo. She had been at the home of her niece, Mrs. Harold Kluver, at Waterloo the past month. She was taken seriously ill Sunday evening and she was taken to a Waterloo hospital in an ambulance. She died on the way to the hospital. She had been afflicted with a heart weakness for a number of years. She was 80 years old last October.
Mrs. Poppenga was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Asjen Freese, among the early residents of north Grundy. She was born on a farm in Pleasant Valley township. A few years later the family moved to a farm south of Holland where they resided until they moved to Grundy Center. There were eight daughters in this family. Only two of them now survive.
On March 12, 1896, Lena Freese and Cornelius Poppenga were married. They resided on a Colfax township farm several years before they moved to Holland. Mr. Poppenga died July 4, 1921. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Poppenga resided on her farm near Holland and later for a number of years in Grundy Center. 14 years ago she moved to Wellsburg to make her permanent home.
Mr. and Mrs. Poppenga had no children. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Poppenga took her little niece, Kathleen Meyer, now Mrs. Harold Kluver, into her home with her and the two resided together several years.
Funeral services were held yesterday in her home at Wellsburg and later at the 2nd Christian Reformed church in Wellsburg. Rev. John Olthoff officiated at the service. Burial was by the side of the husband in the Holland cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Lee Koser and Mrs. Charles Biebesheimer, both of Grundy Center. Her parents and five sisters preceded her in death.
