Joe Arends, 79, Died August 1st

Funeral services for Joe Arends, 79, were held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 3, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church with the Rev. Carl Regnerus officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Church Cemetery.

Mr. Arends passed away at his home early Wednesday morning, August 1, of an apparent heart attack.

Mrs. James Willms sang "In The Garden" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." She was accompanied by Mrs. Clarence Walterman, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were all grandsons of Mr. Arends: Larry Arends, Duane Arends, Ronald Arends, Jay Arends, Randy Arends and Roger Arends.

Glen Lage and Jake Schoneman served as ushers. Flower attendants were Mrs. Harlan Meester, Mrs. Jake Engelkes and Mrs. Dennis Groenwald.

He was born December 8, 1893, in Beaver township, Grundy county, Iowa, the son of John P. Arends, and Altja Peters Arends. On February 2, 1916, at the Pleasant Valley Church parsonage he was united in marriage to Ordie Rindels. They farmed all their married life in Beaver township, the last 55 years on their present farm near Parkersburg. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ordie; five sons, Marlyn of rural Dike; Clarence, rural Reinbeck; and Glen, Lee and Darrell, all of rural Parkersburg; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Claus Haren, Wellsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Eldon; and five half-brothers; and three brothers.

Engelkes-Abels were in charge of arrangements.
