First Area Car Death Of Year Occurs Sunday

One person was killed and six others injured in a car-pickup crash at the entrance to a farm driveway on the blacktop road one mile north of Holland at 12:45 p.m. Sunday.

Injured fatally in the mishap was Ronald Dale Meester, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom C. Meester of Holland. He is Grundy county's first traffic death of the year.

Meester was driving a 1958 Ford Ranchero pickup which was struck by a 1965 Oldsmobile operated by James A. Pieters, 34, also of Holland.

The young man died of a head injury at 4:10 p.m. Sunday at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Six occupants of the Pieters car also were hurt.
They are:
James A. Pieters, fractured ribs and lacerated chin and cheek.
Mrs. James Pieters, 34, cut on right leg.
Jay Pieters, 6, two broken teeth.
Donald Taylor, 32, Waterloo, lacerations on the nose, eye lids and left thumb.
Mrs. Donald Taylor, 31, bruised right leg.
Deana Taylor, 8, skinned knee.

They were taken by ambulance to Grundy County Memorial Hospital. The women and children were treated and released. Both men remained hospitalized.

A seventh passenger in the Pieters car, Janice Pieters, 7, was not hurt.

The collision occurred as Meester was exiting from the driveway at his parent's farm. The Pieters car, which was traveling south, came over the crest of a hill and struck the Meester pickup broadside.

The obituary of Ronald Dale Meester appears in the Holland news section of this week's Register.
