Jake L. VanHauen, age 93, of Holland, Iowa, was born October 26, 1915, the son of Harm and Pearl (Groen) VanHauen on the family farm west of Fern, Iowa. He attended country school, Pleasant Valley #7, of rural Holland.

Jake was united in marriage with Jennie Kruger on September 16, 1940, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church parsonage at Holland, Iowa.

After the VanHauen’s marriage, they moved to Wellsburg where Jake worked for area farmers. Later Jake farmed in the Parkersburg and Fern areas for nearly 40 years. In 1979 Jake and Jennie retired from farming when they moved to their home in Fern.

Jake especially enjoyed livestock, including horses and ponies, cattle, sheep and hogs. He always took pride and pleasure in attending his grandchildren’s activities, especially sporting events and 4-H and FFA events, and building models and replicas of buildings and equipment. Jake was a lifelong member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church where he served as a trustee for several years.

Jake passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit, Grundy Center, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry and Herman; and two sisters, Jennie Syhlman and Tillie Pruin.

Jake is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jennie VanHauen, Holland, Iowa; two sons, Kenneth (Nadene) VanHauen, Grundy Center, Iowa and Keith (Pam) VanHauen, Holland, Iowa; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Brian, Amber and Caden VanHauen, Liberty, Missouri; Wade, Valerie, Caleb, Emily and Courtney Wubben, Manson, Iowa; Brent, Heather, Drew, Trey and Cruz VanHauen, Pella, Iowa; Clint and Sarah VanHauen, Ames, Iowa and Krista VanHauen, Greeley, Colorado and one sister, Gladys Meyer, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2009, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church with burial in the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church Cemetery, both Holland.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and one hour before services at the church.
