Matilda Engelkes, 88

Matilda Engelkes, 88 of Wellsburg passed away on Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes.

Matilda was born on September 21, 1910, in Shiloh Township, Grundy County, the daughter of Harm and Anke Nederhoff O'Kones. She attended country school at Shiloh Township No. 7. On February 18, 1937, she was united in marriage to Jake B. Engelkes at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed for many years on the family farm north of Holland until retiring in 1975 to Wellsburg.

Matilda was a member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, lifelong member of the RCWM group of the church, and served as catechism and Sunday school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jake in 1989; three brothers, Neil Sr., Henry, and Herman O'Kones; and one sister, Anna Murra.

Survivors include her son, Paul Engelkes and wife Mary of Holland, two grandsons, Nathan Engelkes and wife Kelly of Holland and Evan Engelkes of Holland, and one sister-in-law, Katherine Tammen of Parkersburg.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 16, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, rural Holland, with burial following in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Ross Lage, James Everts, Wendell Voss, Al Meester, Mark Luhring, and Jason Meester. A memorial fund has been established. The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
