Alice Luchtenburg, age 91, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of John and Grace (Hippen) Geiken on December 26, 1921, in rural Wellsburg. She received her education at a country school in Wellsburg.

On January 8, 1940, she was united in marriage with John Luchtenburg at the Wellsburg Reformed Church parsonage. They made their home on a farm in rural Dike and in rural Parkersburg, before purchasing a farm near Buck Grove in 1949. Alice was a loving wife and enjoyed working with her husband, John, as they farmed and raised their children together.

John and Alice moved to Parkersburg upon retirement in 1978. Alice moved to Maple Manor Independent Living in Aplington after the devastating 2008 tornado destroyed her home.

Alice was a faithful member of Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, Holland, Iowa. She loved singing and blessed many over the years with her lovely voice. She particularly enjoyed singing with her children in church.

She was a devoted caregiver to her husband for 18 years as a result of his stroke. She loved spending time fishing, gardening, and playing games & sports with her family & friends. She enjoyed working and knew how to make it fun. In later years she found enjoyment in reading, doing puzzles, and playing cards and games. Alice treasured her time spent with her family. She loved people and always had a big smile and loved to laugh and giggle.

Alice died Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John on November 25, 1998; one infant son, Von Jay in 1955; two sisters, Edith Murra and Dena Harms-Lambert.

Alice is survived by her five children, Wendell (Carol) Luchtenburg of Aplington, Iowa, Linda (Les) Mennen of Aplington, Iowa, Velda (Dennis) Geiken of Aplington, Iowa, Nora (Mike) Janssen of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Ron (Valarie Lawton, friend) Luchtenburg of Tiffin, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank Geiken of Wellsburg, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Delores Anderson of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, at Pleasant Valley Reformed Church with burial in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, both in rural Holland.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
