Henry J. Grobe Services Held

Henry J. Grobe, of Wellsburg, passed away on February 12, 1999, at his home in Wellsburg of heart failure in his sleep. He attained the age of 77 years, 10 months and 29 days.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, rural Wellsburg. Pastor Jim Crooks and Pastor Jeannie Knough officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Full military rites were conducted by the Wellsburg Amvets Post 91 and American Legion Post #213.

Pallbearers were Rick Dunn, Bryan deNeui, Bob Valentine, Brad Aukes, Paul deNeui and Ted VanDeest.

Henry was born on March 14, 1921, in Ackley the son of Otto and Gertrude (Johnson) Grobe. He graduated from Ackley High School in 1939 and attended American Institute of Business in Des Moines. He served in the Navy on the US Laub during W.W.II. On June 2, 1963, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Bausman in the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, rural Wellsburg. He worked for General Motors Dealerships in Eldora, Iowa Falls and Cedar Falls as an accountant. Henry purchased H&R Block in Eldora and operated it for many years and later expanded to Wellsburg. He was currently owner/operator of PH Tax Service in Wellsburg. He was city clerk in Wellsburg for 19 years.

Henry was a member of the United Methodist Men at the United Brethren Church in Branson, Missouri and the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion and served as past commander of Roll-Harless VFW No. 3974 in Eldora.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Phyllis of Wellsburg; a daughter, Peg Fowler of Lebo, Kansas; sister, Grace Van Patter of Eldora; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Henry, Jr.; and two sisters, Alvina Abendroth and Florence Mitchell.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
