Mrs. Adelia Smith, mother of Judge Smith of Whitten and Frank Smith of Eldora, died suddenly with pneumonia Tuesday. She took sick Saturday at the home of her daughter of State Center. She was a former resident of Jackson county and lived in Grundy county for many years. Burial will be in the Eldora cemetery, Hardin county.

Mrs. Adelia C. Smith

Mrs. Adelia C. Smith was born Adelia Tuttle, in Sussex County, New Jersey, February 22, 1835, and died Tuesday, August 3, 1920 at State Center, Iowa, after a short illness of pneumonia. At the time of her death she was 85 years and five months of age.

She was united in marriage to Minor O. Smith, February 8, 1855. In the year 1856 they came to Iowa, settling in Dubuque County, where they resided for one year. They then moved to Jackson County, where they remained until the spring of 1876, when they came to Grundy County. Mrs. Smith lived there until the death of her husband, March 23, 1902. Since that time she has lived with her daughter at State Center, Iowa.

Mrs. Smith was a woman of noble character, kind and generous. She became a member of the Methodist church early in life, and took an active interest in all Christian work.

She was the mother of nine children, five of whom survive her. The children are Edward D. of Houston, Texas; Fred of Phoenix, Arizona; Frank A. of Eldora; Jud L. Smith of Whitten and Mrs. I. D. Kauffman of State Center, Iowa.

Short services were held at the resident of Dr. I. D. Kauffman at State Center last Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Clement of Marshalltown officiating. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the old home in Melrose township, the Rev. Allhouse of Whitten conducting the service. Interment was in the Eldora cemetery.

Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were E. D. Smith of Houston, Texas; I. M. Shirk of Wentworth, So. Dak.; Mrs. Carrie Shirk of Spencer, Iowa.
