Bena was born June 2, 1904, the daughter of Jacob and Ella Clauson Klassen in Stout. When Bena was eight years old she went to live with her uncle and aunt, Jake and Mary Clauson after her parents died. She received her education in the rural Grundy County school near her home. Before Bena was married she worked as a housekeeper in various homes in the Stout area.

On February 22, 1944, Bena was united in marriage with John Viel in the home of her Uncle and Aunt, Jake and Mary. After they were married the couple made their home on the family farm. Bena was a wonderful farm wife, an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing and gardening. Bena really enjoyed children and took pleasure from their visits. On September 17, 1967, Bena's husband John died and the following year she moved to Parkersburg. In 1989 she became a resident of the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington.

Bena was an active member of the Reformed Church of Stout. She served on the Ladies Aid Committee and was always ready to volunteer. Bena found great comfort from reading her Bible daily.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Viel, five sisters, Grace Heeren, Anna Klassen, Toma Meester, Toma Klassen and HeiJo Klassen, and one brother, Jacob Klassen.

Bena is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of the arrangements.
