John Oelmann Dies At 93

John H. Oelmann died in his rural Parkersburg home at 11:25 a.m., Monday, April 9th, 1979, at the age of 93 years, three months and 19 days. He had suffered from cancer since February 7 of this year when he was hospitalized for a short time.

John was born the son of Johann D. and Geska Ackkerman Oelmann on December 21, 1885, in Grundy County near Ackley, Iowa. At the age of five he moved with his parents to his present farm and attended Beaver #2, a rural school in Beaver Township, Grundy County. As a young man he received his christian education in the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg.

On May 7, 1919, John was united in marriage to Jennie Meester in the parsonage of the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg, and this union was blessed with two children.

Mr. Oelmann was an active farmer all his life and was still farming at the age of 91 years. He was a member of Reformed Church of Stout and had served as a Deacon and was on the parsonage building and planning committee, and was also Secretary of Beaver #3 a rural school for over 30 years, and a trustee of Beaver Township for many years.

Survivors are: his two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Johanna) Heyenga of 4213 Newland Drive, Cedar Falls, and Miss Annie Oelmann of Rt. 2, Parkersburg; four grandchildren, Mary Smith of Waterloo, Cathy and John Heyenga both of Cedar Falls, and Joyce Heyenga of Des Moines; two great-grandchildren, Aaron and Adam; and a brother, Henry Oelmann of Parkersburg, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Jennie, who died in 1959 and three sisters.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 12, 1979, in the Reformed Church of Stout with Rev. Mark Volkers officiating. Mrs. Bernard Schnell was the organist and Randall Konken was the vocalist. Casketbearers were: Duane Nevenhoven, Jake Bergman, Roger Bergman, Roland Meester, Kelvin Meester and Jim Harken. Interment followed in the Stout Cemetery.

Schwartz-Engelkes Funeral Home of Parkersburg, Iowa, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
