Rites Saturday For Sam Konken

Funeral services were held at the Salem Lutheran Church, rural Parkersburg, last Saturday afternoon, April 16, 1977 for Sam Konken, 80. Burial was in the Stout Cemetery in Stout.

Mr. Konken of 3900-98 Cedar Heights Drive, Cedar Falls passed away at the Schoitz Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on Thursday morning, April 14.

Clergyman Rev. Darwin G. Reiter officiated at the 1:30 p.m. services. Organist, Mrs. Clifford Bergman played selected selections for the prelude and postlude and accompanied the soloist. Mrs. James Willms sang "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross".

Ushers were John Arends and Teunis Byl. Casketbearers were Ray Cirksena, John Akkerman, John Bakker, Wm. Bergman, John H. Konken and Herman Wiltfang. Friends who had charge of the floral arrangements were Mrs. Darrell Arends and Mrs. Donald Pruisner.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Dike Funeral Chapel who were in charge of the arrangements held viewing at the Chapel on Thursday and until 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning when the casket was taken to the church for viewing prior to the services.

Sam Konken was born Aug. 21, 1896 near Stout, the son of Harm and Fannie Kalkwarf Konken. He was united in marriage to Sophia Klunder on Oct. 19, 1938 at Nashua. After their marriage they lived in Fern until August '76 when they moved to their home in Cedar Falls. He had been a resident of the Ravenwood Nursing Home in Waterloo for two weeks before his death.

He had been a Feed and Corn salesman for 27 years.

He attained the age of 80 years, 7 months and 23 days.

His survivors include his wife, Sophia; three daughters, Mrs. Jack (Norma) Grady of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Melvin (Lois) Thurston of Decorah and Mrs. Lorraine Timmer of Dike; one son, Harlan Konken of Rohnert Park, California; three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Wiltfang of Parkersburg, Mrs. Fannie Hempen of Grundy Center and Mrs. Rena Bergman of Dike and five grandchildren.
