Mary Sophia Heyenga, nee Reineking, was born November 28, 1896, at Franklin, Wisconsin, the daughter of Frederick Reineking and Mary Arpke.
She attended the public schools in Town Herman, Wisconsin, and later attended the Mission House College, Plymouth, Wisconsin, for about 2 years.
She joined the Immanual Reformed Church of Town Herman, Wisconsin, which is located near the Mission House, at the age of 14 years, by confirmation.
On June 19, 1918, she was married to Walter J. Heyenga at Everly, Iowa, where she had been living with her sister and husband, Rev. and Mrs. J. M. DeVries. For the following 2 years they lived in Holland, Michigan, where he attended and graduated from the Western Theological Seminary. She served with her husband for one summer at Kesley, Iowa, and one summer at Herman, Minnesota.
Their first charge was at Alexander, Iowa, where they lived from 1920 until 1926, when they accepted a call to the Reformed Church in Stout. From 1926 until his death in October, 1954, they served the Stout Reformed Church.
Following his death she lived for a short time in Cedar Falls, Iowa, but desired to make her home in Stout and returned as soon as she could find a home. On December 12, 1955, shortly after returning to Stout, she suffered a paralytic stroke from which she never fully recovered. After spending about 17 weeks in the Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, she had recovered sufficiently to return to her home, where she was cared for, in the best possible way, by Mrs. Etta Peil and many of the ladies of the town of Stout. She remained very patient during her 3 years of confinement.
She passed away at her home in Stout about 3:50 a.m. Saturday morning, December 20, 1958, reaching the age of 62 years and 21 days.
She is survived by two sons, Calvin and Walter both of Cedar Falls, Iowa; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. H. H. Vordermark (Esther) of New Bremen, Ohio, and Mrs. Elsa DeVries of Sibley, Iowa, and a brother, Fred Reineking, of Plymouth, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Heyenga, on October 8, 1954, two sisters, one in infancy, and four brothers.
