Hilko Arends Dies Sat. At Waterloo

Hilko Arends, a lifetime resident of Grundy county, died Saturday at Woodlawn Convalescent Home in Waterloo, where he had been a patient for several months. He was in the University Hospital at Iowa City for treatment several weeks during the past year. Before going to the convalescent home he was at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harold Cummings, three miles east of Stout.

Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon at the Cummings home and later at the Reformed church in Stout. Burial was in the cemetery at Stout. Rev. M. Weeldreyer from Allison and Rev. Runion from Dike officiated at the service.

Had he lived until June 25th, he would have been 75 years old. He was born in Beaver township June 25, 1880. On March 31, 1907 he and Emma Groen were married. The wife died in 1937. He was engaged in farming during all of his active lifetime. He lived three years in Cedar Falls and since 1947 had made his home with his daughter and family.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Harold Cummings of Parkersburg, and one son, Edward of Grundy Center; four grandchildren; one brother, John, of Stout; two sisters, Mrs. Dora DeVries of Grundy Center and Mrs. Trena Wirtjes of Cedar Falls; four half-brothers, Peter of Cedar Falls, Arend and Joe of Parkersburg, and Dick of Beaman; one half-sister, Mrs. Claus Haren of Grundy Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one grandchild.
