Louise Sophia Harken, 97, a resident of the Eastern Star Masonic Home of Boone since November, 2001, died peacefully on January 7, 2011.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 10, 2011, at 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Boone with Dr. Marcia Rich, Interim Pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the West Friesland Presbyterian Cemetery on Monday, January 10, at 2:30 PM of rural Ackley, Iowa.

She was born December 22, 1913 in Ashton, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Sophie (Oberbeck) Wubbena. Her mother died shortly after her birth, and Louise was raised by John and Dena Wubbena, her paternal grandparents.

She married Urban Harken, June 6, 1934, at the University of Dubuque Chapel, Dubuque, Iowa.

She graduated from the two year Normal Course at the University of Dubuque and taught in Webb, Iowa for two years. Later she received her Bachelor’s Degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and her Master’s Degree from the University of Iowa. She taught and was an elementary principal in the Burlington Community School District for 30 years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington, Iowa, where she was the first woman elder in that congregation. After moving to Boone, she was received into membership of the First Presbyterian Church of Boone by her son, Rev. Dr. Richard Harken, pastor. She was active in Presbyterian Women; PEO, Chapter P; Alpha Delta Kappa, and Retired Teacher’s Organization in Burlington. Her hobbies included reading, sewing, cooking and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her stepmother, Minnie Hickman Wubbena, her stepsister, Blanche Lamfers, and an infant grandson, Scott Matthew Harken.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Delores Harken of Lansdale, PA; Richard and Janelle Harken, Boone; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and C. Thomas Brooks of Cedar Falls. She had five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Sara and Jeff McHoul with children Zachary, Joshua, and Emma Louise of Lansdale, PA; Jason and Melissa Harken with children, Gretchen and Erik of Spring City, PA; Aaron and Brigitte Harken with sons Jakob and Nicholas of Collegeville, PA; James and Mary Harken with son, Lucas of Phoenix, AZ; and Andrew and Leigh Anna Harken of Ossining, NY.

Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Boone or to the Hearthstone Unit of the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa.
