Etta Janssen, 87

Etta Janssen, of Aplington, passed away Monday, April 10, 2000, at the Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, from natural causes. She reached the age of 87 years, four months and six days.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church, Ackley. Rev. Randy Crane officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Larry Janssen, Carl Janssen, Chad Eltjes, Michael Janssen, Joshua Janssen and Scott Eltjes.

Etta was born the daughter of Andrew and Jennie Miller Kruger on December 4, 1912, near Wellsburg. She grew up on a farm south of Ackley. Etta received her education in a rural Ackley country school near her home.

On January 9, 1935, Etta Kruger was united in marriage with Carl V. Janssen in the parsonage of the West Friesland Church, rural Ackley. They made their home on a farm three miles east of Ackley where they lived their entire married life. Shortly after Carl's death on October 31, 1963, Etta moved to Aplington in 1964. She began working at the Ackley Presbyterian Home as a cook and retired in 1982. Later she moved to the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington in 1996.

Etta was a long time member of the West Friesland Church and was a member of the Ladies Aid for many years. She enjoyed having picnics, camping and fishing at Steamboat Rock and especially having the family together for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Etta was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; one grandson, Shelton Gay; her parents; two sisters, Midena Kruger and Helen DePringer; and two brothers, Dick and Andrew Kruger.

Etta is survived by three sons, Calvin Janssen of Aplington, Dennis Janssen and his wife Diana of Lebanon, TN and Duane Janssen and his wife Mary of Marshalltown; two daughters, Dorothy Eltjes of Aplington and Shirley Narron of Pine Level, NC; 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Agnes Pieper of Frisco, TX, Jennie Warschkow and her husband Paul of Belmont and Grace Robertson and her husband Bob of Alden; four brothers, Jake Kruger of Phoenix, AZ, Herman Kruger and his wife Barbara of Clear Lake, Roy Kruger and his wife Leila of Garner and Frank Kruger and his wife Ethel of Kameron, WI.

Schwartz Funeral Chapel of Aplington was in charge of the arrangements.
