Rites Held For Virgil Janssen

Virgil Harvey Janssen of rural Ackley, passed away Friday morning, January 15, at 7:30 a.m. at the Ackley Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 18, at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church. Rev. Charles Westendorf and Rev. Tim Diehl officiated.

The organist was Ramona Harken, the pianist was Rhonda Hofmeister and the singers were the West Friesland Presbyterian Church choir.

Casket bearers were Leslie Janssen, Kevin Janssen, David Ulfers, Harris Janssen, Mike Ward, Dawson Ackerman and Keith Janssen.

Serving as ushers were Neil Knoll and Lester Miller.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Janssen was born on December 30, 1925, in Grundy county, the son of Henry V. and Henrietta Kolthoff Janssen. He attended school in Grundy county through the eighth grade. He served his country in the Army from March 1946 until May 1947.

On January 16, 1948, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Ackerman at the Washington Reformed Church parsonage. They started farming in the Wellsburg area for about seven years. In 1956, they moved south of Ackley and in 1973, they moved to the farm where they presently resided.

One son, Russell Dole, was born to this union. He was baptized as an infant by Rev. Henry Johnson at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church. He made his confession of faith on October 10, 1948.

Throughout his years, he was an active member of the West Friesland Church, serving as a trustee and deacon and also was a choir member.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Henrietta, in May of 1983, his father-in-law, Dick Ackerman, and one brother-in-law, Robert Ackerman.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one son, Russell, and his wife, Eileen; two grandchildren, Jill and Lori Janssen; his father, Henry V. Janssen; four brothers, Delmer of Ackley, Marvin, Kenneth and Vernon all of Wellsburg; two sisters, Agnes, Mrs. Ralph Ward of Marshalltown, and Carol, Mrs. Ronald Glen of Ackley; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The Brandt & Fritz Funeral Home, Ackley, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
