Services Held For Former Wellsburg Man

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Andrle and Creps Funeral Home in Eldora for Jake Boomgarden, 91, who died Friday, February 12, at his home near Lorimor.

Rev. Fred Rosenkrans officiated. Mrs. Fred Rosenkrans was organist. Casket bearers were Gary, Brian, Craig, Kevin, Curtis and Richard Boomgarden. Military services were provided by the Walter Sayer Post of the American Legion and the Roll-Harless Post of the VFW. The interment service was held in Shiloh Cemetery at Wellsburg.

Jake Boomgarden was born July 3, 1896, to Heye Boomgarden, Sr., and Swantje Feldman Boomgarden. He was raised at Wellsburg. He married Etta Smidt on November 10, 1926, at Brookings, South Dakota.

The family lived at Wellsburg until 1937-38 when they moved to Eldora. In 1940-41 they moved to Steamboat Rock where they lived until 1986 when Jake broke his hip. He was a resident of the Winterset Care Center from October 1986 until April of 1987 when he and his wife made their home with their son, Heinie and his family in Lorimor.

He engaged in road construction for the county, dynamiting and disc sharpening. He was a World War I veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Heye Jr., Trenus, Ted and George, and one great-grandson, Jake Stephen Schwarck.

Survivors include his wife, Etta, of Lorimor; four sons, Lloyd and Rowena Boomgarden of Denver, CO; Heinie and Judith Boomgarden of Lorimor; Ralph and Maxine Boomgarden of Eldora and Lee and Imogene Boomgarden of Wellsburg; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
