Mrs. Evert Riekena Has Attack of Apoplexy and Expires Shortly After
Mrs. Evert Riekena died at her home at eight o'clock Friday night from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy which she received at noon of the same day. The news of her death was a shock to the community in which this beloved woman had lived for forty years. Tho having suffered for several years from a weak heart, Mrs. Riekena was believed to be enjoying good health. The stroke came on while Mrs. Riekena was in the garden gathering vegetables for the mid-day meal. She was able to get back to the house before she fainted away. Medical assistance was summoned at once but this furnished no relief.
Funeral services were held at the home and at the Rev. Hoefker church Monday afternoon. The services at the house were conducted by Rev. Engelkes and at the church by Rev. Ahuis. The high standing in which the deceased was held in the community was attested by the very large attendance at the funeral services.
Mrs. Riekena was 53 years, 8 months and 15 days old at the time of her death. She was born in Camden, Germany and came to this country with her parents when she was a young girl. Her maiden name was Gertrude Stoehr. She was married to Evert Riekena thirty years ago and from the time of her wedding day up to the time of her death she was a resident of the same house. Mrs. Riekena was the mother of two daughters both of whom together with the husband survive her. The daughters are Mrs. Cebe Meyer and Mrs. Ubbie Mennenga, both of whom live in this county.
Mrs. Riekena was a woman with a splendid christian character and a kindly and lovable disposition which endeared her to all who learned to know her.
Those from a distance present at the funeral were, Jacob Slurholtz and wife, Mrs. Meyer and Ben Slurholtz form Carroll county, C. Stoehr and wife from Monroe, S.D., Thomas Stohr and wife from Chicago, Fred Mommen from Bridgewater, S.D., Fred Aukes from German Valley, Ill., and E. B. Aukes and wife from Woden.
