Carl was born on August 3, 1928, on the family farm in rural Wellsburg, the son of Oldig O. & Ada (Dresselhuis) Nederhoff. A lifelong resident of Wellsburg, he attended grade school at Shiloh # 9 and later attended the Wellsburg High School. For several years, he helped on the family farm. In 1950, Carl enlisted in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1952.
