Funeral Is Held Friday For Mrs. John Heikens

Funeral services for Mrs. John (Gertie) Heikens were held on Friday, February 25, 1977 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church. Rev. Leslie Kuiper officiated at the services. Music was furnished by The Messengers accompanied by Mrs. LuRay Meyer. Miss Elizabeth Eekhoff provided organ music. Flower attendants were Mrs. Leland Heinrich and Mrs. Aeilt Terfehn. Pallbearers were Jonas Geerdes, Elmer Heetland, James Geerdes, Julius H. Heikens, Orville Wilts and Evert Heikens. Interment was made in the First Christian Reformed Church cemetery.

Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Heikens passed away Tuesday afternoon, February 22, 1977, at the Grandview Heights Nursing Home in Marshalltown due to complications of advanced age. She reached the age of 87 years, 9 months and 6 days.

She was born on a farm in Shiloh township, west of Wellsburg on May 16, 1889, the daughter of John and Gertie (Ruter) Geerdes. She attended the rural school in the area. On February 28, 1929, she was united in marriage to John Heikens. Following their marriage they lived on a farm in Hardin county for one year, and in 1930 moved to their farm west of Wellsburg. In 1955 they retired and moved to Wellsburg to make their home.

Mrs. Heikens was a member of the First Christian Reformed church of Wellsburg, having made confession of her faith in Jesus Christ on December 25, 1931.

Preceding her in death were: her parents, and two brothers, Claus and George J. Geerdes.

Survivors include her husband, John; two brothers and four sisters: Ben J. Geerdes of Steamboat Rock, Mrs. Florence Heetland of Ackley, Mrs. Clara Geerdes of Wellsburg, Miss Ordie Geerdes of Wellsburg, Gratus J. Geerdes of Wellsburg, Mrs. Grace Bakker of Wellsburg and many other relatives and friends.
