Hilka Geerdes Dies Saturday At Aplington
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg for Mrs. Hilka Geerdes, 89, who died Saturday afternoon at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington due to a heart condition.
Rev. Leslie Kuiper officiated the service, and Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Music for the service was provided by 'The Messengers'--Richard Schafer, Lary Riebkes, Melvin Haupt and Arnold Eiten. Mrs. LuRay Meyer was accompanist and Elizabeth Eekhoff was organist.
Mrs. Harm C. Meyer and Mrs. Tielko H. Bunger were flower attendants.
Casket bearers were Sherman Cook, Donald Geerdes, Dale Geerdes, Tony Ackerman, Bruce Ackerman and Earl Slinker.
Mrs. Hilka Geerdes had been confined to the nursing home since December 14, 1976. She reached the age of 89 years, 3 months and 27 days.
She was born in Holland, Iowa,on October 15, 1887, the daughter of Tjade and Hilka (Ulfers) Tjaden, and attended the rural school in Colfax township. On January 28, 1909, she was united in marriage to Albert Geerdes at the home of her parents. This union was blessed with 6 children. Following their marriage they lived on the Geerdes home-place farm southwest of Wellsburg. In 1939 they retired and moved to Wellsburg to make their home. They celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on January 28, 1959, with their family and friends. Mr. Geerdes passed away on February 22, 1967.
Mrs. Geerdes was a long time member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg having made confession of her faith in Jesus Christ on March 12, 1919.
Those preceding her in death were: her parents, her husband, 2 sons, Jake A. Geerdes and Wayne Geerdes, 1 grandchild, 2 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Survivors include: 4 daughters, (Tilda), Mrs. Raymond Hook of Aplington, Mrs. Gladys Eckhoff of Wellsburg, Mrs. Vera Ackerman of Iowa Falls, (Thelma), Mrs. Paul Slinker of Grundy Center, 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
