George J. Geerdes Passed Away Wed., Funeral Saturday
Funeral services for George J. Geerdes were held on Saturday afternoon, April 8, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church. Rev. Harold Hollander was officiating clergyman. Music was given by a men's quartet, Richard Schafer, Lary Riebkes, Melvin Haupt and Arnold Eiten. Miss Elizabeth Eekhoff was organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. Donald Purvis and Mrs. Henry Peters. Pall bearers were Elmer Heetland, Kenneth Heetland, Virgil Heetland, Jonas Geerdes, James Geerdes and Glen Bakker. Interment was made in the First Christian Reformed Church cemetery. Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
George J. Geerdes passed away around 6 o'clock Wednesday evening, April 5, at the Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo due to a heart condition, after suffering for years with bronchiectasis. He had entered the hospital on March 16th for treatment. He reached the age of 74 years, 11 months and 7 days.
He was born on a farm in Shiloh township, on the county line 4 miles west of Wellsburg, on April 28, 1897, the son of John and Gertie (Ruter) Geerdes. He received his education in the rural schools in the area.
The family moved to a farm 3 miles west of Wellsburg in 1938. In October of 1970 he and his sister Ordie moved to Wellsburg where they had purchased a home.
He was preceded by one brother in infancy and one brother at the age of two.
Those left to mourn his passing are 5 sisters and 2 brothers: (Gertie) Mrs. John Heikens of Wellsburg, Ben J. Geerdes of Steamboat Rock, Mrs. Florence Heetland of Ackley, Mrs. Clara Geerdes of Wellsburg, Miss Ordie Geerdes of Wellsburg, Gratus J. Geerdes of Wellsburg, (Grace) Mrs. Gerald Bakker of Steamboat Rock and a host of other relatives and friends.
