Arthula Brown Rites Wednesday
Arthula R. Brown, 93, of Waterloo and formerly of Grundy Center, passed away of natural causes Sunday, September 15, 1996 at Friendship Village in Waterloo.
Arthula was born July 13, 1903 in Palermo township in Grundy County the daughter of Arthur and Margaret Merritt. She received her education in Grundy Center, graduating from High School in 1921. She attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a degree in home economics. She taught in Wadena and Hampton before marrying Horace D. Brown on August 26, 1927. Arthula was the first married teacher at Lincoln #2 in Dike.
Arthula was a member of First Baptist Church in Grundy Center, P.E.O. and Farm Bureau.
Arthula was preceded in death by her parents; husband Horace in 1975; one brother, Roger Merritt; and one sister, Janetta Strack.
Survivors include one son, James Brown and wife Pat of Naperville, IL; two grandchildren, David Brown and Elizabeth Ann Monti; two great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Brittany; and one sister, Margaret Miller of Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 18, 1996 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center with Pastor Mike Nemmers officiating. Interment followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Pallbearers were Larry Eslinger, Dale Brown, Bill Stephenson, Kevin Schwab, Mark Eberline and Jon Michaelson.
A memorial fund has been established.
