Dr. Joseph Rose Services Held
Dr. Joseph Rose, 93, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, at the Long Term Care Unit of Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center of natural causes.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. Burial followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.
Pallbearers were R. James Albright, Walter H. Miller, Kevin Nielson, Dan Petersen, Merlyn Petersen and Merlin Freese.
A memorial fund has been established.
Joe was born on August 11, 1903, in Linn County the son of Delferd DeLoss and Anna (Elliott). He grew up near Center Point. Joe received a BA degree from Cornell College and then went to the University of Iowa to study medicine. He graduated in 1930 and then interned at the Marine Hospital in New Orleans, LA for a year.
He married Phyllis Carpenter from Grundy Center on July 30, 1931. To this union was born three children: Laura, George and Wade. After the death of his first wife he married Emma Freese on August 18, 1960, in Nashua.
He practiced medicine in Grundy Center for 50 years, from 1931 to 1981. During this time he was involved with the Boy Scouts, was on the School Board fore 12 years, and Rotary. Joe was a 50-years member of the Masonic Lodge, York Rite Lodge, Odd Fellows, Iowa State Medical Society and a member of the American Medical Association, and an honorary staff member at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He was the Grundy County Medical Examiner from 1964 to 1976 and a past commander of the Grundy Center American Legion Post. Dr. Rose also served during World War II in the Navy holding the rank of Commander, stationed at Norman, Oklahoma, Des Moines, and in Cuba. While in Des Moines he held the position of Senior Medical Officer Procurement for Iowa and Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis, daughter, Laura Anette Rose; parents; and 2 brothers, Delferd DeLoss and George DeMott.
Survivors include his wife, Emma of Grundy Center; and 2 sons, George of Parkersburg and Wade of Grundy Center.
The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, was in charge of the arrangements.
