Rites Held For Mariam E. Bohlen

Mariam Edith Bohlen of Allison, Iowa, passed away Friday, August 9, 1996, at the Waverly Community Hospital, Waverly, Iowa, having attained the age of 81 years and 21 days.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 12, 1996, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison, Iowa, with the Reverend Virgil Dykstra officiating. Interment followed at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center, Iowa.

Pallbearers were Danny Bohlen, Darren Bohlen, Randall Bohlen, Alan DeBeer, Byron Johnson, and Leon Johnson.

Born July 19, 1915, in Grundy County near Stout, Iowa, Mariam was the daughter of Luitjen and Mildred (Sink) Beenken. She received her education in a rural school near her home.

On June 3, 1946, Mariam was united in marriage to Herman Bohlen in the Bethel Christian Reformed Church near Allison, Iowa, by the Reverend Peter Huisman. Herman and Mariam farmed near Parkersburg and Allison until their retirement to the town of Allison. They sold for the Minnesota Woolens Company for a number of years. Mariam had been a resident of the Allison Care Center for just a short time.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Bohlen, who died November 12, 1985; one step-son, Oren Bohlen; one grandson, Jeffrey Bohlen; three brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include one son, Harold, and wife Judy, of Prior Lake, Minnesota; two step-daughters and their husbands, Jean and Harold DeBeer of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Martha and Lester Johnson of Aplington, Iowa; two step-sons and their wives, Melvin and Valda Bohlen of Allison, Iowa, and Marvin and Elaine Bohlen of Clarksville, Iowa; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward and Harvey Beenken; and five sisters, Katharina Ridder, Lena Anderson, Pearl Hartgrave, Clara Hinders, and Lavian Martin.

The Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, Iowa, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
