Services Held For Dr. Richard Nelson Former Resident

Dr. Richard Ward Nelson, 85, a retired official of the Internal Revenue Service, who had lived in Alexandria, VA since 1935, died May 23 at Alexandria Hospital after a heart attack.

He began his government career with the U.S. Forestry Service in 1934. A year later, he became head of its division of Forestry economics. He held that post until 1942, when he joined the old Bureau of Internal Revenue. He retired from the IRS in 1965 as assistant to the commissioner of Internal Revenue.

Dr. Nelson was a native of Grundy Center and had served in the Navy during World War I. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees as well as doctorate in economics at the University of Iowa. He also taught economics there before joining the government.

He was a member of the Cosmos Club and Phi Beta Kappa.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Vanderwicken Nelson; one daughter, Rosalie Yates, both of Alexandria, VA; one son, Merrill of Signal Mountain, TN; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
