Fred DeVries Died Saturday

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:30 in the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home at Grundy Center for Fred DeVries, 78, who died Saturday, April 22, 1978 at 3:43 a.m. in the Beverly Manor Convalescent Center, Grundy Center.

Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf of the Bethany Presbyterian church, officiated. Organ interludes "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art" were played by Mrs. Raymond Appel. Casket bearers were: Robert Boelman, Leo DeVries, LeRoy Huesman, Leslie Harms, LaMoine Harms and Paul Horan. Floral attendants were Mrs. Bill Harken and Mrs. Vernon Klosterboer. Burial was in Fairview cemetery, Grundy Center, Iowa. Following the committal service friends and relatives returned to the Farm Bureau building for a period of fellowship and refreshments.

He was born March 28, 1900 in German township, Grundy county, Iowa, the son of Folkert and Hiske Spieker DeVries. On September 7, 1938 he was united in marriage to Etta Geersema at Wellsburg. Following their marriage they farmed near Steamboat Rock, Eldora, and Ackley. They spent the last 16 years of farming on their own place near Stout, retiring and moving to Grundy Center on December 15, 1959. He was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian church. A memorial fund has been established.

He is survived by his wife, Etta, four brothers, Jerry and Carl of Ackley, Herman of Wellsburg, Edward of Aplington and two sisters, Mrs. Jans (Ellen) Huesman and Mrs. John J. (Lenora) Janssen of Ackley.
