Mrs. Stevens Rites Held Thursday
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jane "Mamie" Stevens were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Conrad United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ray Howland officiated assisted by her nephew, the Rev. Max Belz of Walker. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery. Mrs. Bruce Applegate was organist and accompanied the congregational singing. Casketbearers were Vane Graham, Don Martin, Russell Eggleston, Leo Dodd, George Markwitz and Robert Parker. Flower bearers were Mrs. Vane Graham and Miss Irene Middleton.
Mrs. Stevens was born June 10, 1880 on a farm north of Conrad and with the exception of a few years spent her entire life in this community. She was the daughter of Delevan W. and Margaret Ralston Barnes. She attended State Normal School at Cedar Falls and taught school in northern Grundy County until her marriage to Walter M. Stevens Dec. 24, 1902 in Cedar Falls, Ia. They farmed in the Grundy Center vicinity for a few years until returning to Conrad. They were the parents of five children, three of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, Miss Evelyn Stevens, with whom she made her home and Mrs. Harold (Isabelle) Youngblood of Conrad. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Raymond (Jessie) Belz of Walker; many nieces and nephews, two step grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mabel and Hazel, and five brothers, George, Henry, Lloyd, John and Stanley, also preceded her in death.
She had been a member of the Methodist Church here for more than 60 years and was a lifetime member of the WSCS. She was Cradle Roll superintendent and later worked with the primary children in Sunday School for over 50 years.
