Ila Langdon, 82, Dies In Hospital
Miss Ila Langdon, a lifetime resident of Grundy county, died in the Grundy Memorial Hospital Friday where she had been a patient the past four weeks. She was 82 years old. She was afflicted with arthritis and complications.
Miss Langdon was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Langdon. She was born on a farm in Felix township and grew up there. In 1893 she graduated from the State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. For two years following her graduation she taught school in Felix township.
Served 9 Years As Deputy County Auditor
In November 1894 her father was elected Grundy county Auditor and the family moved from the Felix township farm to Grundy Center. She became her father's deputy on January 1st, 1895, and remained with him as his deputy during his three terms. Later she served three years as deputy county auditor under C. E. Thimas.At the conclusion of her nine years' service in the auditor's office she entered the University of Iowa and graduated in 1907 from the Medical School of Bacteriology. She served as bacteriologist for the late Dr. Fred Powers of Waterloo for five years.
Deceased was a member of the First Presbyterian church, Grundy Center, and was church treasurer for 23 years. She was an honorary member of the Iowa State Sunday School Association, member-at-large of the DAR, and a member of the Iowa State Historical Society.
Miss Langdon was Sunday School superintendent and taught an adult Bible class in the First Presbyterian church for many years. She served as secretary of the Grundy Center Cemetery Association from its organization until recently when she resigned due to ill health.
Following the death of her parents she and two sisters remained in the family home. The surviving sisters are Misses Carrie and Ada Langdon.
Other surviving relatives are two nephews, Lester Langdon, Greenfield, and Lyle Langdon, of Gary, Indiana, and two grand-nieces.
Funeral Services Monday
Funeral services for Miss Langdon were at the Ferree Chapel Monday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Gerben Van Putten, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery.--The Grundy Register (Grundy Center, Iowa), 10 June 1954, sec 3, pg 1
