Archie Kern Died Thurs. In Morrison

Archie O. Kern died at his home in Morrison Thursday morning, August 20, at 9:45 after a lingering illness at the age of 70.

He was born May 16, 1883, near Traer, son of S. E. and Sarah Jane Kern. His mother died when he was but 17 days old, and Mr. and Mrs. John McClung, an uncle and aunt living near Grundy Center, took him into their home and reared him. He spent his entire life except for seven years in Grundy county. These seven years were spent in Black Hawk and Floyd counties.

On June 19, 1912, he was married to Vera Buchan of Grundy Center. They immediately started farming near Grundy Center and they continued to farm most of their married life until failing health forced Mr. Kern to move to town. They moved from Grundy Center to Morrison about a year ago.

He is survived by his widow and three children: Mrs. Mavis Gilbert of Waterloo, Oscar and Joyce at home. One daughter, Gladys, preceded him at the age of 14 in 1941. Two grandchildren, Arnott and Sharon Gilbert, also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Ferree funeral home in Grundy Center. Rev. Oliver Stevenson of Cedar Falls officiated. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery.

Archie was a kind, loving husband and father, never complaining of his own discomfort and illness. Always his thoughts were for his loved ones. He was a good neighbor, and as along as his health permitted, was ever willing to help everyone. He will be great missed by all who knew him.
