Mrs. J. H. Essig Dies Thursday at Advanced Age
Mrs. J. H. Essig, who taught school in Grundy county sixty years ago, died at her home in Grundy Center Saturday evening from old age. She was 83 years old. She resided in the county continually for 67 years. She lost her eyesight twenty years ago but she courageously continued with her church and household duties and kept contact with her neighbors and friends until near the end.
Funeral services were held at the Coffman funeral home Tuesday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. David Alexander, pastor of the First Baptist church. Burial was in the Grundy cemetery. Pallbearers were her former school pupils, Willard and Charles Brockway, John and Charles Desmarias, and Harry and Walter Lynn.
Obituary
Mrs. Essig was born at Utica, N.Y., Feb. 3, 1855. Her father was Wm. J. Denio, French-Baptist minister; her mother, Albina Herrick, English-Irish. They moved to Monkton Ridge, Vt., in 1859 and to Ottawa, Ill., in 1870, where she taught school at the age of 16 years. They came to Grundy Center, Iowa, in 1877 and located on a farm now known as the County Farm.She taught school at 15 Mile Grove and in the Lynn districts until 1882. She was married to J. H. Essig on Nov. 19, 1885, and lived in Grundy Center until her death Feb. 19, 1838.
She was baptized into the Baptist Church at an early age and was very active in all church work. She lost her sight in the flu epidemic of 1918.
She is survived by her husband, J. H. Essig of Grundy Center; a son, Thearl D. Essig and three grandsons of Sioux City, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Thomas Anderson, Chicago; and a brother, John Denio, of Cedar Rapids.
Out of town relatives and friends at the funeral service were Mrs. Fannie Boyington and her son Hugh and two daughters, John DeNio and Mr. and Mrs. Korlan from Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Katie Snovel and daughter, Clara from Eldora, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Smith, Waterloo, and Mr. and Mrs. Thearl Essig and son Junior, Sioux City.
