Mrs. Maria Kelley, Early Resident of County, Dead
Mrs. Maria Vasey Kelley, who came to Grundy county seventy years ago, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. A. G. Briggs, on January 1st. Mrs. Kelley was past 88 years of age. Death came after a gradual decline for a number of years.
Funeral services were held at the Coffman funeral home in Grundy Monday afternoon with Rev. A. G. Annette officiating. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery.
Maria A. Vasey Kelley, daughter of Anthony and Myra Kent Vasey, was born in Richmond, Canada, Aug. 27, 1848, and passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. A. G. Briggs, Jan. 1, 1937, at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 4 days.
Mrs. Kelley came to Grundy county with her parents in 1866. She was the last of a family of ten children, six girls and four boys.
On May 26, 1890, she was united in marriage to George Mastin and the same year they built a cozy home on their own quarter section of land near Wellsburg, Iowa. In the spring of 1894 they moved to Grundy Center where Mrs. Kelley continued to reside up to the time of her death, her husband having passed away in 1899.
On Sept. 24, 1902, she was united in marriage to Horace W. Kelley. Mr. Kelley passed away in March of the following year.
She leaves to mourn her departure, 8 nieces and 8 nephews, Mrs. Forrest Meyers and Mrs. A. G. Briggs of Grundy Center and the others in distant places, and a host of friends.
One of the outstanding characteristics in Mrs. Kelley's life was her devotion to her Lord and the church. She was a member of the First Baptist church here and was an earnest and devoted soul in that which was committed to her. For many years, of course, she had not been able to take an active part, but it was a joy to visit her and to hear her tell what she would like to do if strength permitted.
