Mrs. Von Dees Dies At Green Mountain

Mrs. Harm von Dees, 85, pioneer Grundy county resident, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dick Vry, 2 1/2 miles north of Green Mountain, Wednesday evening at 5:08 p.m. For the past 1 1/2 years she had been in failing health and death was attributed to complications of advanced age.

Mrs. von Dees was born Gertie Kriens, Dec. 6, 1861, at Bunde, Germany, the daughter of Jasper and Nancy Kriens. She was married in Germany to Harm von Dees and the couple lived there until 1902 when they moved to the United States with their family of six children. They settled on a farm near Beaman where they lived until 1916 when they moved to Grundy Center. Mr. Von Dees died Oct. 20, 1923, and she continued to live there until her health failed.

She was a member of the German Presbyterian church which is now the Bethany Presbyterian church of Grundy Center.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Reent Kaput of Lyle, Minn., Mrs. Harm Schipper of Aplington, Mrs. Dick Vry of Green Mountain and Mrs. Albert Kaufman, route 5, Marshalltown, and one son, Jasper von Dees of Beaman. Nine grandsons, 7 granddaughters and 14 great-grandchildren also survive.

Preceding her in death besides her husband were four sons, one daughter, two brothers, two sisters and one grandson.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bethany Presbyterian church in Grundy Center, following a prayer service at the Jasper von Dees residence at 1 p.m. Rev. Homer A. Doak, pastor of the Green Mountain, Congregational church, had charge of both services, assisted by Rev. F. J. Langenberg of Grundy Center. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery. The body was removed Thursday from the Estel funeral home to the Jasper von Dees residence 2 1/2 miles northeast of Beaman.

Pallbearers were all grandsons: Harm, Reent and George Kaput, Wilbur and Elvin Weise and Herman Vry.

Flower bearers were all granddaughters: Margaret and Gertrude Vry, Delores and Katherine Kaufmann, Mrs. Henry Vry and Mrs. Walter Lehman.
