Claus Behrends Dies at Hospital

Claus Behrends was born Jan. 16, 1896, in German township, Grundy county, the son of Claus and Margaret (nee Walters) Behrends. He passed away at Allen Memorial hospital, Waterloo, Jan. 10, 1946, at the age of 49 years, 11 months and 24 days, after a prolonged illness of heart disease.

Mr. Behrends spent his boyhood on a farm. On Sept. 15, 1916 he was united in marriage to Etta Brower. The young couple made their home on a farm in Colfax township. Claus worked for the county and also for George Mamminga. In 1930 the family moved to Grundy Center. The past few years he worked for Wilbur Smith on farms north of Grundy Center. In June 1945 they moved to Cedar Falls, after doctors advised him to quit working. Since that time he had spent much time in hospitals in Iowa City and Waterloo.

He is survived by his wife and the following children: Claus Behrends, Cedar Falls; Mrs. Everett Bleeker, Jacksonville, Ill.; Marlyn Behrends, Morrison; Mrs. Rodney Burns, at home; Warren Behrends, at home. Also one grandchild; his mother, Mrs. Claus Behrends, Aplington; three brothers: Henry, of Grand Rapids, Minn., Frank of Aplington and Richard of Bristow; three sisters, Mrs. Harm Harms of Bristow; Mrs. Peter Vanderwerf of Aplington and Mrs. Bill Siebenga of Parkersburg; also many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Grundy Center Monday afternoon with Rev. David Alexander in charge. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery.
