Mrs. F. U. Callaway Dies Suddenly Tuesday Night

Mrs. F. U. Callaway died suddenly at her home in Grundy Center about 10:30 Tuesday evening following a heart attack. Her son Vincent who has been home from the army on a furlough, expected to return to his post late Tuesday night. The family were together for a visit at the home during the evening. Shortly after ten Mrs. Callaway said it was her bedtime, that she was tired, and she went to bed where she expected to sit up until her son left. A few minutes after she became seated in her bed she died without uttering a sound.

Mrs. Callaway became afflicted with cancer on one leg a little over a year ago. The leg was taken off above the knee to check the trouble. A short time later a recurrence of the cancer reappeared and a second operation was performed. She got along well several months thereafter. A month ago swelling developed in the second leg. She was taken to the hospital at Iowa City for a checkup a few weeks ago and it was learned that cancer had spread elsewhere and that her lungs became infected.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the Stephen Funeral Home. Rev. David Alexander will officiate at the service. Burial will be in the Grundy Center cemetery.

Mrs. Callaway was 68 years old on the 3rd day of last March. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dalgliesh. She was born in Lincoln township, Tama county, and attended the Grundy Center school. She was a member of the third graduating class from this school. Later she attended the State Teachers college at Cedar Falls. After completing the normal course there she taught in the rural schools of the county a few years. She joined the First Presbyterian church in Grundy Center in 1888 and up to the time of the beginning of her illness she was active in Sunday School and church work. She attended Sunday school 21 consecutive years without missing a Sunday.

On June 27, 1900, she was married to Frank Callaway. Since that time she made her home continually in Grundy Center.

Surviving are the husband and sons Wilbur and Vincent. There is one grandchild, Donna, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Callaway. Other surviving relatives are three sisters, Nellie, Margaret and Sadie Dalgliesh, and one brother, James Dalgliesh of Des Moines.
