Bert Callaway Dies at Gifford
Bert Callaway, a long time resident of Melrose township and at one time a member of the famous Whitten baseball team, died Wednesday morning at his home at Gifford. He was 77 years old.
Bert Callaway was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Callaway, early residents of Melrose township, Grundy county. The father and his eight sons organized a baseball team that gained a statewide reputation.
He was married to Belle Eggleston Aug. 11, 1914. After their marriage the couple made their home at Gifford. The past 16 years he drove a school bus out of Gifford.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 Friday afternoon in the Gifford Methodist church.
Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Lenora Austin of Des Moines and Mrs. Margaret Lyman of Eldora; one son, Charles at home; five grandchildren; one brother, John Callaway of Whitten and one sister, Mrs. Emma Wilken of Mt. Pleasant.
