Beaman Child Run Over By A Car And Killed

Beverly Ashton, 2 Years and 3 Months Old Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ashton Meets Tragic Death At Conrad

Beverly Ashton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ashton of Beaman, was killed instantly on Conrad's Main street at 5:10 Tuesday afternoon when she ran in front of a car driven by Jim Curry of Conrad. The little girl was two years and three months old.

Had Started To Run Across The Street
The little girl and her mother had been to Conrad in their car. Their car was parked in the middle of Conrad's Main street. The mother was putting packages in the car when Beverly suddenly left her and started across the street. The mother saw the car approaching and she screamed a warning, but it was too late as one of the headlights and the left front fender struck the child and she was thrown under the car and both the left front and rear wheels passed over her, resulting in a skull fracture. the driver of the car stopped within 15 feet and he and Rev. Mitchell from the Alice church who witnessed the tragedy picked the child up and carried her into the office of Dr. Spain. The child was dead when the doctor examined her.

Driver Held Blameless
Jim Curry, owner and driver of the car which struck the little girl, is employed in the Kruse Elevator at Conrad. He was driving home from work. His car was going not more than 10 miles an hour. The child ran in front of it so suddenly that it was impossible for him to stop. He is not held to blame. He is 68 years old and was deeply shaken because of the deplorable accident.

Sheriff John Meyer and Coroner Harold Engelkes were notified of the accident and they with Patrolman Nelson made an investigation and found that no element of blame could be attached to anyone for the child's death.

The death of Beverly Ashton was Grundy county's first highway fatality for 1949.

Parents Are Grief-Stricken
The parents and others of the child's relatives are grief-stricken and they have the heartfelt sympathy of all who know them.

Beverly K. Ashton was born at Beaman, December 22, 1946. She was a lively, lovable child. She has a baby brother, Richard Wayne, who is two months old. Other surviving members aside from the parents are George Ashton, grandfather, and Mr. and Mrs. Jess Wogan, Mrs. Ashton's parents, from Marshalltown.

Funeral Services Friday
The body of the little child was taken to the Johnston funeral home at Conrad. Funeral services will be at the Methodist church at Beaman at 2:30 Friday afternoon. The service will be conducted by Rev. Sunderlin.
