Services Friday For Raymond Mertz

Raymond (Deke) Elmer Mertz, age 74, passed away Tuesday afternoon at the Beverly Manor Convalescent Center in Grundy Center.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning, October 5, at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Grundy Center. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart cemetery.

There will be a parish rosary at 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Ferree-Oltmann funeral home.

Raymond Mertz was born July 8, 1899 in Grundy Center, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Etta (Condon) Mertz. He spent his entire life in Grundy Center.

He was married to Lida Plager at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Grundy Center February 20, 1950.

He was a postal clerk for 41 years. He was a veteran of both World War I and World War II, and was very active in the American Legion for many years, the 40 & 8, World War I Barracks; he held many offices in the American Legion.

He was a 31 year member of the Elks club; a member of the Holy Name society of the Sacred Catholic church.

Surviving are his wife Lida, one brother, Arthur of Glenview, Ill., and a brother-in-law, Floyd DeSeelhorst of Grundy Center.
