Hollis D. Miller, 90

Hollis D. Miller, 90, formerly of Grundy Center, passed away on Monday, Jan. 8, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Grundy Center. Father Dennis Quint officiated. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Military graveside services were conducted by the Grundy Center American Legion Post #349 and Amvets Post #17. A memorial fund has been established.

Hollis was born on April 23, 1910, in Grundy Center the son of Daniel O. and Maude (Heitman) Miller. Hollis graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1927, and also attended two years of college in Grundy Center. He married Anna B. Judge on January 29, 1940, in Ames. Anna preceded him in death on October 7, 1984.

Hollis served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945. He served in the 3rd Regiment under General Patton during WWII. He worked as a surveyor from the Grundy County Engineer's Office. He then became a partner in Beu & Sons, which is a sand and gravel business. He continued with them after they sold to Martin Marietta and worked with them for several years until his retirement. After his retirement, he worked for the Spokesman Press in Grundy Center.

Hollis was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Manly Coffee Club, and the American Legion Post #349, all of Grundy Center. He enjoyed golfing and having coffee with the Manly Coffee Club.

Survivors include his two daughters, Linda Miller and her husband Kenneth Lyftogt of Cedar Falls and Elizabeth (Mark) Shore of Urbandale; and two grandchildren, Chad and Jenny Shore.

Hollis was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; his parents; and his brother, Vernon Miller.

Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the arrangements.
