Death Calls Gertrude Connell

Passes Away at Her Home in This City Sunday Morning

Gertrude Rita Connell passed away at 1:45 Sunday morning, Dec. 4th, 1921, at the home of her father, James Connell, of this city, aged 16 years, 1 month and 21 days.

Although a sufferer from diabetes for the past two years, her last severe illness was of brief duration. During all her illness Gertrude never complained, but kept up her cheerful, hopeful disposition until the very last.

When death came to her relief the sad news spread over the town as on the wings of wind. Wherever it touched it left sorrow, and the expressions of sympathy for the bereaved ones were many and from the heart.

Bright, happy and cheerful, Gertrude carried sunshine with her wherever she went. She had always a smile and a pleasant word for her friends. Her death comes as a dark shadow to her friends who loved her so dearly. In school she was an exceptional student and her sweet face and winsome ways won the hearts of both teachers and classmates.

Born on a farm near Doran, Minn., Oct. 12th, 1905, Gertrude was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Connell. She came to this city with her parents in October, 1913, and has since lived here, attending the city schools until her failing health forced her to give up her school work.

What makes her death seem the more sad is the fact that in October, 1920, a little more than a year ago, her sister, Teresa, passed away and a week later the mother was called in death. Also her only brother, Elmer, died January 14th, 1925. She leaves to mourn her death her father and three sisters, Mary and Lucy, at home, and Sister Mary Adrienne, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. from Sacred Heart church in this city, Rev. Father Norris officiating. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery west of town.

Those present at the funeral from a distance were: Sister Mary Adrienne and Sister Mary Rosiene, of Milwaukee; James Hogan, Fairbury, Ill.; Mrs. Dennis Powers and son, Harry, of Livermore, Ia.; Tom Connell, Waterloo; Mrs. Albert Hanisch, New Hartford, Ia.; Margaret and James Connell, Dubuque; Mildred Cook, Corwith, Iowa.
