Harlan Benjamin VanDeest, 63, of Grundy Center, died September 3 at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center.

Funeral services were September 6 at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. A memorial fund has been established in his name.

He was born December 11, 1937 in rural Grundy Center, son of Benjamin and Jennie (Beenken) VanDeest. He received his education in country school and the Holland School, graduating from Grundy Center High School in 1958. On June 28, 1959 he was united in marriage to Janice Petersen at the Congregational Church in Reinbeck. They made their home near Grundy Center and later moved to Holland where they owned and operated Van Deest Tire and Repair for 29 years and also started the garbage route in Holland owning and operating this business for 29 years. He also farmed, did custom combining and sold Crow's Hybrid Seed Corn for many years. He enjoyed camping, square dancing, watching Nascar races, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Janice; parents, Benjamin and Jennie; daughter, Ronda (Mrs. Daryl) Jans of Grundy Center; two sons, Wayne of Sioux Falls, SD and Brian of rural Dike; sister, Marian Schipper of Aplington; and by two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ranae Dawn.
