Howard Carl Popes, 61, of Grundy Center, passed away Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Grundy Center. Father Dennis Quint officiated. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Grundy Center. Graveside military rites were performed by the Grundy Center American Legion Post #349 and AMVETS #17.

Howard was born Aug. 14, 1939, in Nashua the son of Carl and Laura (Merfeld) Popes. He attended Nashua High School. Howard married Sandra Beenken on April 14, 1972, in Grundy Center. He worked for the REC in Grundy Center as a materials manager.

Howard was a veteran of the United States Army, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Grundy Center, and President of the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed fishing, learning about the history of WWII and spending time with his family.

Howard was preceded in death by his father, Carl; and one sister, Patti Shimek.

Howard is survived by his wife, Sandra Popes of Grundy Center; his mother, Laura Popes of New Hampton; a son, Troy Popes of Lebanon, MO; a daughter, Ann Marie Popes of Marion; one brother, Glen and Billie Popes of West Long Beach, NJ; and three sisters, Mary and Jim Mahoney of Nashua, Rita and Charlie Swinton of Nashua and Sister Carla Popes of Dubuque.

Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, was in charge of the arrangements.
