A Pioneer of Grundy County Passes Away on Memorial Day

The death of J. S. B. Thompson removes another old settler from the activities of life and places a new mound in the cemetery of Grundy Center for the soldiers to remember on next Decoration day. Mr. Thompson came to Grundy county in the prime of his life and has been one of the successful farmers and hardworking men of this community. He served his country in the war of the Rebellion and belonged to Co. B 1st Iowa Cal., a regiment commanded by the writer's father, and was honorably discharged after a faithful service that was accompanied by many hardships.

Deceased was a successful fruit raiser and his displays at our county fairs have always been of the best and finest in the county.

He made a visit to his son in Oregon and while there was called to his long home, on May 30, 1902, very suddenly and with but little warning. His feebleness of health has been the cause of anxiety for some years and he had hoped to find considerable benefit in the mild climate of Oregon.

--The Grundy Republican (Grundy Center, Iowa), 5 June 1902, pg 5
