Mr. Jacob Abels died at his home southwest of Grundy Center on Thursday, Feb. 27, 1902, at the age of fifty-four years. Deceased was a German by birth having come to America forty-eight years ago and settled with his parents in Stevenson county, Ill., where he resided until seven years ago when he came to Grundy county. He was married in 1871, and his wife, eight daughters and three sons survive him. Mr. Abels was the first of a large family to answer the call of the grim reaper, death, he being one of a family of nine, his five brothers and three sisters all being alive at this time. The deceased was a soldier in the Civil war and was a man well thought of by his acquaintances and neighbors.
The funeral was held on Saturday at Drake church, interment taking place there, and large number of friends being in attendance.
The family feel very grateful to all who were kind and helpful during the long illness of their loved one, he being for several months a sufferer with cancer of the stomach. The friends and neighbors who were at all times ready to lend their assistance in all hours of need have the gratitude of every member of deceased's family.
