A Former Resident Passed Away
Eugene Masfield Harkens, a former resident of Grundy Center passed away at his home at Sherbourne, Minn., at 1:30 Monday morning. He had been ailing for some time but was only bedfast a few hours. Funeral arriving Tuesday night. Brief services were also held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Cliff Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. F. Black. The remains were laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery.
Eugene Manfield Harkins, was born in Ogden, N.Y., Nov. 18th 1844 and died at Sherbourne, Minn., Monday morning April 6th 1908.
Early in life he moved from New York to Wisconsin. His father and mother died when he was a small boy and his boyhood days were spent in Wisconsin and Illinois.
From there he came to Floyd, Iowa, and later to Grundy Center, in 1874, where he made his home until 1891. In 1891 he went to Sherbourne, Minn., where he resided until the time of his death.
He enlisted in the army at the outbreak of the civil war as a drummer boy at the age of sixteen, joining the 7th Wisconsin regiment, and served throughout the war. He was charter member of the G.A.R. post of Grundy Center, also a member of the G.A.R. post and I.O.O.F. lodge at Sherbourne.
He has been postmaster at Sherbourn for the last ten years of his life.
Though not a member of any church, he was interested in them all in the town where he lived and gave generously to the support of each. He was recognized as a straight forward upright honorable citizen and his death is deeply mourned by the entire community where he lived, as well as by his many friends in Grundy Center.
He was at his office on Saturday and made up the mail Sunday evening as usual, but at 9 o'clock Sunday night was taken sick, and died at 1:30.
Mrs. Harkens was formerly Miss Stuck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stuck of Grundy Center.
