Gene Murphy Dies At Waterloo Hosp.

Gene Murphy, widely known farmer in Grant township, who had a wide acquaintance over the county, died in St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo at one o'clock on Friday. He had been ill with cancer during most of the past year. He entered the hospital on July 5th. Had he lived until September 4th he would have been 69 years old.

Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church in Grant Township Monday forenoon. The service was conducted by Rev. Fr. Mullan. Burial was in the cemetery adjoining the church.

William Eugene Murphy was born on Sept. 4, 1897, the son of T. D. and Jennie Dregnan Murphy of near Dike. He married Mary Connell June 17, 1936, at Sacred Heart church in Grundy Center.

He farmed all of his life and was in partnership with a brother, Raymond, who preceded him in death in September of 1965. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church of Dike, the Catholic order of Foresters in Grundy Center and the Farm Bureau.

Surviving are his wife, four brothers, Laurence, Luke, Ralph and James, all of Dike, three sisters, Miss Vera Murphy of Dike, Mrs. Donald Challman of Galva, and Mrs. R. W. O'Connor of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
