William "Leo" Zern, 91, of Beaman, died May 6 at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center under the care of hospice. Funeral services were May 10 at the Beaman Methodist Church. Burial was in the Conrad Cemetery.

Leo was born March 19, 1913, to William C. and Ruth Dorothy Zern. He worked for farmers in this area in 1932. He married Matilda B. "Tillie" Vajgrt on December 28, 1934. He helped her father farm and mined coal in the winter. His wife died October 27, 1983. He married Charlotte Barfels Untiedt May 14, 1997.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; and three brothers, two in infancy.

Survivors include his wife; two sons; three step-daughters; five half-brothers; two half-sisters; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
