Lawrence "Larry" Emery Barnes, 86, of Grundy Center, died April 22 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. Funeral services were April 26 at the First Baptist Church in Grundy Center. Burial followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
Larry was born July 15, 1917, the son of Loyal Edward and Ruth (Arney) Barnes. Larry attended school in Centerville and then later in Moulton. After school Larry went to work as a carpenter in New York until 1937, at which time he started working as a farmhand in Illinois. Larry moved to Grundy County and began farming in 1939. On February 10, 1942, Larry was united in marriage to Rachel Grimmius. He farmed until 1960 when he moved to Grundy Center and worked various jobs. From 1967 until his retirement in 1986, Larry worked all over the country as a millwright in steel construction, living all those years in Grundy Center, except 1975-1978 when they lived in Florida. Larry was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grundy Center and a member of the Illinois Local Millwright Union and was very active with the Grundy Center Senior Center. Larry was a former member of the Grundy Center Fire Department and a former member and Deacon of the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel; a daughter, Dorothy and her husband Dave Leach of Des Moines; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Loyal Douglas and wife Alice Barnes of Cedar Falls; and two sisters, V. Evelyn and husband Cletus Pfiffner of Oelwein and V. Marie Cantrell of Mancos, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Betty Dahlstom-Snodgrass; and a brother, Floyd Chester Barnes.
