VANDEEST, WERKMAN, SMIT

Grace VanDeest, 94, of Grundy Center, died March 20, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center. Memorial services were March 23 at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Bethany Presbyterian Church and the American Cancer Society.

Grace was born January 6, 1910, in Groninga, Netherlands, the daughter of Derk and Wobbechien (Smit) Werkman. Her family moved to America in 1910. She attended country school. On December 29, 1929, she was united in marriage to Adolph B. VanDeest at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church Parsonage in rural Holland. Adolph passed away on March 15, 1988. Grace worked at the Grundy Center School as a school cook for many years. Grace was a 60 year member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph; an infant grandson; four brothers, Onno, Henry, Harm and Dick Werkman, one sister, Henrietta Harms, and two brothers in infancy.

Survivors include her two sons, Benjamin VanDeest of Denver, CO, and Dick A. and wife Nancy VanDeest of Lafayette, MN; two daughters, Winona M. and husband Stan Lauterbach of Waterloo and Erma K. and husband Larry Thompson of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister, Winnie Werkman of Winston-Salem, SC; two brothers, George Werkman of Holland and Jake and wife Lois Werkman of Cedar Falls.
